Annual Cooks River Clean Up and Paddle Against Plastic
(The next big one is now Sunday 19 November 2023!)

This November (Sunday 19th) , the Club (and its partners) shall be hosting it’s sixth annual Cooks River Clean Up and Paddle Against Plastic.

Event registration here (now open!)

The Clean Up is part of our broader efforts to step into a stewardship role and actively ‘give back’ to the beautiful river we’re lucky to call home. It’s also a great opportunity to reach out to the wider community, and bring likeminded people together people to help care for the Cooks River—historically considered one of Sydney’s most polluted waterways.

This last year year, 150 people took the water in canoes and kayaks, removing 687kg of small plastics from the river! Our participants—many of them first time paddlers—also pulled out some memorable items, from water guns to office chairs and tricycles. In 2019, the collective clean-up efforts removed over 3 tonnes of waste, and in 2020 we removed a whopping 13.8 tonnes!

None of this would be possible without the work of our amazing volunteers who work hard behind the scenes to make the clean up happen, helping out with everything from launching boats to designing logos, and from COVID safety planning to lifting rubbish.

As we move forward with planning for our next clean up in 2023, we would love to connect with other people passionate about the Cooks River who can help make the next event even bigger and better than ever.

We’d welcome your involvement and support
There are significant efforts required to deliver a successful event/community initiative of this scale and importance. We are looking for environmentally conscious community-minded organsiations to join us on the day in the form of general participation and in any other ways that you may consider appropriate – eg helping promote the event,  encouraging team members to come along, assisting with equipment etc. More than anything though, we’d  just love to see you and your team members at the event on the day.
