Come join the River Canoe Club in our annual Clean Up and Paddle Against Plastic along our beautiful river!
The aim of the event is to continue raising community awareness and clean as much as possible of the Cooks River – historically considered one of the most polluted waterways in Sydney.
Over 3 tonnes of waste was removed at our 2019 event, and in 2020 we removed a whopping 13.8 tonnes!
This year we’re moving upstream to the new boat launching facility at Ewen Park. Teams of community members will be working both on the water and on the banks of the Cooks River.
You can join us for the day on land or water to take part in removing litter from the Cooks River and surrounding banks.
3 time slots are available throughout the day: with 8:30am, 10:30am and 12:30pm start times.
Book your space to attend for a land-based clean-up (it’s free!), and we’ll provide you with a litter picker, rubbish bag, orientation and map.
And/or grab a friend and book one of our canoe fleet to join the clean-up on the river! Canoe hire is $16 for a 90 minute session, and includes use of Canoe Club paddling + safety equipment. You can also BYO boat and join the cleanup in your own craft—just make sure to register via Eventbrite.
The clean-up day on March 28 complements work done by our partners at Ocean Crusaders, who will be out on the river dredging up rubbish in the lead-up to the event. They have a select number of “hardcore volunteer opportunities” in the week before the big event: sign up via Eventbrite if you are ready to get serious about cleaning with a full day on the OC boat.
You can also come by on the 28th to learn more about the amazing work they do cleaning up waterways all over Australia!
We’d welcome your involvement and support
There are significant efforts required to deliver a successful event/community initiative of this scale and importance. We are looking for environmentally conscious community-minded organsiations to join us on the day in the form of general participation and in any other ways that you may consider appropriate – eg helping promote the event, encouraging team members to come along, assisting with equipment etc. More than anything though, we’d just love to see you and your team members at the event on the day.
