Hi paddling folks

As you are all aware there is the potential of having an extended break through combining the time from Easter Friday to Monday of the long Anzac weekend (with only 4 days leave from work) . We appreciate that some people might be looking for paddling trips to cover this extra time so as a club we are considering providing some paddling options for club members in case you have extra time availability from Easter to Anzac long weekend. You might be able to do just the Easter part or just the later part with the Anzac long weekend or the whole lot.

Depending on water levels (and maybe the weather), options being considered are:

Abercrombie River – a more whitewater focussed trip

Part 1 – Easter weekend – Hadley (Fullerton Road) to Abercrombie  54km – mostly Grade  1-2 with some easy grade 3 rapids. One tricky grade 3 which might be best portaged.
Part 2 – post Easter – Abercrombie to Piesleys’s Creek 40km mostly grade 2 with some easy grade 3 depending on water level.
Paddle in canoe or whitewater kayak. It might be both parts or only one of the two parts.

Macquarie R – Long Point to Mookerawa ie backwater of Burrendong dam, approx. 62km. Mostly grade 1-2. First day is easy grade 2, day 2 is moving water till lunchtime, then flatwater for remainder of day 2, and day 3. Paddle in canoe

Macquarie R – from just below the Macquarie Marshes to the Barwon River – approx. 100km of moving water
Paddle in canoe or sea kayak / touring kayak

Macintyre R on the NSW / QLD border. Start at Goondiwindi (or Boggabilla) and going to at most Boonangar Crossing – approx. 90 – 100km of mostly moving water
Paddle in canoe or sea kayak / touring kayak

Dumaresq R in the upper border rivers area between NSW and QLD – maybe Riverton to Texas – approx. 80km of mostly moving water but may have some pools
Paddle in canoe or sea kayak / touring kayak

Macleay R
(mid NSW coast) downstream of Gara River junction to Georges Creek – 101km of grade 1 or moving water mostly, with some grade 2 . Note that this is through very remote country.
Paddle in canoe or kayak

At present the most likely combination in sequence is:

  • Macquarie R – Long Point to Mookerawa – over Easter
  • Macquarie R – from just below the Macquarie Marshes to the Barwon River from say Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 April. Monday would be for travel home

This is subject to water levels and would be done in open canoe but could also be done in kayak.

Some canoes/kayak might be able to be borrowed from the club with the normal hire fees. If interested and you have all the necessary paddling and camping equipment, skills and boat transport, please let us know your thoughts.
