RCC Autumn Working Bee and Oskar Speck session
We have a special session lined up with Dr Roland Leikauf, curator at the Australian National Maritime Museum, who will share the story of Oskar Speck and bring along artefacts from his 50,000km journey from Germany to Australia by kayak.
Roland’s talk and Q and A will begin at 10.30am.
There is a long standing rumour that Oskar’s kayak was once gifted to a River Canoe Club member, before being lost in a clubhouse fire in the 1970s. We are keen to see what Roland might be able to shed light on.
To make a full morning of it, we will start early at the clubhouse with a short working bee. An hour or two of cleaning, small fixes, and organising storage to get things shipshape. It would be great to have as many hands as possible.
For those who would rather be on the water, we will also be running a short learn to canoe taster session with places limited. Huge thanks to James and Lisa for volunteering to lead the paddle. You might even have Roland joining you on the water..
Everything will wrap up by 10.30am ready for the talk.
After that, for those who would like to, we will head over to the Concordia German Club for a German lunch and a drink.
