Nepean River – Penrith to Warragamba Dam
This scenic paddle explores a beautiful section of the Nepean River, starting from Tench Reserve, Penrith, and heading upstream through a gorge towards Warragamba Dam. Tench Reserve offers ample parking and convenient boat ramp access, making for an easy trip start. The river passes through a spectacular, steep-sided gorge, creating a peaceful and remote wilderness atmosphere. After an initial 2.5km section of the river, kayaks and canoes are typically the only vessels seen along this tranquil stretch.
Subject to the favourable conditions on the day, this paddle will be a full day, 34 km return. Due to the distance and limited light this paddle is only open for experienced paddlers that can comfortably paddle 25-30km at a speed of 6.5km/hr to 7km/hr. There are no early exits on this trip so you must always return to the start point.

Club boats are available for this paddle but you will need to arrange pick-up and transport yourself. If you are using a club boat please select one that is 4.8m or longer.
Please bring:
- Kayak – Check it’s in good order
- PFD with whistle
- Clothing – Boardies, Rashie (long sleeved preferably), Gloves
- Wide brim hat and sunglasses (glasses strap recommended)
- Paddling shoes to be worn when paddling and portaging
- Cag or rain jacket suitable for paddling in poor conditions
- Sunscreen
- Any medication you need
- Food and water for trip. There is no drinking water available anywhere on this waterway (one litre per hour if hot weather recommended)
- Spraydeck (optional)
- Insect repellent
- Spare, warm, clothing in drybag or dry hatch
