Nepean River between Menangle and Douglas Park
The Nepean River between Menangle and Douglas Park is an unspoilt gem close to Sydney. The paddle is pretty and feels isolated. No other watercraft are likely to be encountered other than kayaks and canoes. From Menangle the river passes through pastures and into wooded riverbanks. About 6km from Douglas Park the riverbanks rise to an impressive low gorge of about 80m high rock walls. There is a pretty side passage to the Cataract River that can be paddled about 1km from the Douglas Park weir.
There is good parking at the Nepean River Reserve near Menangle. Entry to the water is a bit tricky and down a slippery, mud bank just upstream of the railway bridge and weir. (Keep clear of the weir.) An alternative launch is from the Douglas Park Weir. There is a small parking area with loose sand so care needs to be taken to avoid cars becoming bogged.
This river is classed at Grade 1 in the waterways guide but is usually flat and still unless after rain. If the river is flowing this stretch of river is best avoided as tree hazards may make it dangerous.
