Whitewater Paddling is a dangerous activity that should only be undertaken in groups with proper training, and competencies.

The Shoalhaven River at Coolendel is a picturesque and serene location, perfect for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.  The River Canoe Club has run several fun weekend paddles from Coolendel including weekends to introduce paddlers to easy whitewater water.

The river is accessed through the Coolendel campground via a road from Nowra, part of which is unsealed but suitable for 2WD vehicles. The campground offers amenities including showers. Camping and day visitor charges apply. It is nestled along 2.5km of the banks of the lower Shoalhaven River that is mostly gentle flat water with one small Grade 2 rapid where the river winds its way about a section of large rocks. The currents are good for practicing various moving water skills and it is very easy to portage back above the rapid for multiple runs.

WARNING – About 1.5km downstream of the Coolendel Campground the river has been impacted by floodwaters.  There are several sections with logjam (tree hazards) across the entire channel. Even in low flows these are dangerous and must be portaged from well before the hazard. In moderate flow or higher, the approaches make exiting the river impossible.  Paddling downstream from the campsite should be avoided in moderate or high flows. In this case it is better to paddle downstream of Grady’s Riverside Retreat.

A short drive from Coolendel provides easy access to longer flatwater sections of the Shoalhaven River. Good launch spots are Grady’s Riverside Retreat (camping and day fees apply) which is about 25 minutes from Coolendel or the Calymea Creek Kayak Launch Ramp which is about 35 minutes from Coolendel.

Danjera Dam is about 55 minutes away from Coolendel and, whilst small, it is well worth a visit. It is possible to explore about 6km from the Dam wall to Danjera Creek.
