“What we do is have fun,” says a beaming Roddy Kerr, Changemaker and dedicated Tempe River Canoe Club organiser, exuding river joy after the club’s weekly fitness paddle to Botany and back. “We’re a recreational club, not competitive. There’s no one doing hard core, personal bests with stop watches. The club is run by volunteers. For us the river is a living thing we really get involved in. Because we are competing with cricket and rugby we’re not seen as a high priority for funding sadly. But last year we ran a huge community event that pulled 3 tonnes of garbage out of the river. We’ve got a colony of pelicans, lots of cormorants. This river isn’t an amenity. It’s a state of mind!”
The Cooks River Changemaker course kicks off this weekend with lots of new ideas pouring in around ways to connect people to the river. Watch this space!
Cooks River is a beautiful waterway that is 90% urbanised and therefore prone to having plastic and other waste from the streets washed into its waters. The pollution affects wildlife and ecosystems, and also washes downstream into the ocean.
Our planet is in ecological crisis, but through acting together we can make a difference.
So come down on September 28th and lend a hand to clean a patch of Mother Earth, show her you care, and connect with your local eco-conscious community!
We’ll meet at 11:30am at Ewen Park and clean until around 1.30 – 2pm. After the clean up we’ll have a picnic, so be sure to bring along some food to share and a rug to sit on and enjoy the rest of the afternoon.
BYO gloves, wear sturdy shoes and we’ll supply the bags!
See you on the 28th ?

Mubcrabs Cooks River Clean Up
6th July 2019
The Mudcrabs are a local ecological volunteer group which cares for The Cooks River and its foreshore environment by regularly collecting rubbish and restoring bush along Cooks River. Recently some River Canoe Club members participated in the Mudcrab’s Cooks River Cleanup, scooping out rubbish and continuing the close links already developed with the Mudcrabs. Bravo team!
