Due to a Strong Wind Warning and Heavy Rain. The Canoe Training on the 26th July 2020 has been postponed to Sunday 2nd August.

The Sunday Session was previously booked out however, places may come available if there are any cancellations due to the change of date.

We will be getting instruction from one of Australia’s best canoe instructors, Travis of Paddle and Portage Canoes.

The training will be at Swallow Rock, Grays Point in the south of the Sydney Metropolitan Area. (https://goo.gl/maps/7MG3Sr2AsKZCsTCa7)

Swallow Rock on the Hacking River has a sandy beach and river bottom and some of the clearest water in Sydney on a relatively sheltered river. Perfect for learning some new skills.

The cost for the one day training will be $65, including the training and use of club canoe, paddle and PFD. I have limited the numbers to 12 people per day.

If you would like to be on the overflow list to be notified if spaces come available this week please complete the google form below:

Before Registering please understand that this event is a River Canoe Club Members Event and that you will need to be a Full Member of River Canoe Club to be eligible for this event.

ie Trial Membership is not sufficient to be eligible for this event.

Sunday 2nd August – Waiting List

Note:

  1. Note, this is a MEMBERS ONLY EVENT. If you are not currently a full club member please make sure you join up before you register or by the 21st of July. (https://rivercanoeclub.org.au/club/join/). A Trial Membership is not sufficient to be eligible for this event.
  2. There is a field in the registration to indicate if you would be interested in carpooling from the club house. We may be able to get this to work if we get enough cars and passengers. Limiting the number of car movements is always a good thing.
  3. This session is targeted at adults or young adults 16 years and over. Please no children under 16 years.
  4. If your goal is to paddle a canoe with your family and young kids, which is a great goal to have, it is best to learn to be competent in a canoe before attempting to bring the kids along. There will be an opportunity to bring the kids on the trips that follow.

Why would I want to Canoe rather than Kayak?

The canoe offers some advantages over a sea kayak for river and touring trips such as WOMDOMNOM, Murrumbidgee Childowla to Gundagai, Tumut River, Lower Shoalhaven and Tallowa Dam overnight camping trips.

Canoes are easier to pack, carry more stuff and are better suited to moving water and tight turns than the sea kayaks.

If you are paddling with kids a canoe has plenty of room for overnight camping gear and the kids.

However canoeing requires a new skill set, paddling with a single blade in a pair is a challenge. If you learn to do it well it is amazing how versatile a canoe can be.

If the Beginners Session in July goes well we may look at running an Intermediate/Moving Water Course in Spring with some more moving trips over Summer.

The lofty goal is to build a team capable of taking on the Clarence River Canoe Trail in Easter 2021. (https://www.myclarencevalley.com/clarence-river-canoe-and-kayak-trail)
