A fun day trip to check out Lake Illawarra just south of Wollongong. (The start point is about a 1hr 15 minute drive from Tempe)
This trip is on Lake Illawarra south of Wollongong. The lake is a large expanse of shallow water. The shallow depth makes it difficult for powered vessels to use large sections of the lake but these remain good for kayaking. In moderate winds the lake may become challenging for chop and small surf but there are usually sheltered routes that can be taken. The southwestern side is natural without significant development and attracts a variety of birds including black swans. On the southern side of the lake entrance there is very shallow water that attracts a variety of wading birds. The lake entrance is strongly tidal but worth the effort to paddle under Windang Bridge.
This paddle will be approximately 20km. You must be able to paddle 20km at a speed of 5-6km/hr to participate in this paddle.
The intention is to run this paddle in calm, non-challenging, conditions, however, on the exposed lake water conditions can, and sometimes do, deteriorate unexpectedly. To take part in this paddle you must F1 minimum – able to cope with small waves and wind and able to undertake an assisted rescue. Everyone should bring a spray deck although you may not need to use it.
Club boats are available to use on this paddle but members will need to arrange their own transport for these. The usual contribution for boat use applies ($20).
