Unfortunately due to the passing of River Canoe Club’s Patron Basil this weekend event will be postponed by a week as the Memorial Service for Basil will be held at he club on the 28th November
The next opportunity for canoe training is planned to be a weekend away, on the 5-6th December 2020. The Murrumbidgee River near Childowla south of Bookham.
The plan for the weekend is to spend two days learning how to paddle a canoe in moving water. There are some small Grade 1 rapids near the Nanangroe Reserve where we can practise how to safely negotiate moving water. The plan is to be canoe only to focus on canoe specific skills.
To take part you will want to be able to paddle a canoe in a tandem pair and be familiar with the J, Sweep, Rudder Strokes and Bow Draw.
The plan is to camp at the Nanangroe Reserve on Friday and Saturday night.
Nanangroe Reserve is a crown land reserve with no facilities and occasionally some stray cattle, it is little more than a sand bank. You will need to be completely self contained for the weekend with camping equipment, food, water and cooking equipment. At this time of year there is a fire ban which prevents us from having campfires to be prepared with a stove for cooking. We will set up a communal toileting area to minimise our impact on the area.

If you are using the club equipment such as canoe, paddle, PFD and helmet there is a gear usage fee of $50 for the weekend. If you are bringing your own gear there is no gear usage fee.
This training event will be for members only, if you are not already a member of the club please make sure you join before registering.

This will be a weekend trip to Childowla on the Murrumbidgee River just south of Yass.
The Murrumbidgee River downstream of Burrinjuck Dam is subject to irrigation release for the farming areas near Gundagai and beyond, this means the river levels are not dependent on local rainfall. The river includes a section of Grade 2+ and many Grade 1 races ideal for starting out on moving or white water.
The weekend will be camping on a crown land reserve with no facilities. You will need to be self sufficient with food, water and camping equipment. This time of years there is often a fire ban in the area so be prepared to cook with stoves rather than solid fuel fires. (No Fires)
